Lifeguards warn of potential lightning strikes at beaches

SAN DIEGO – Lightning is possible at the beaches as a thunderstorm moves northwest through San Diego County Tuesday afternoon, according to National Weather Service.

The hazardous weather will be in effect until 5 p.m. Tuesday, NWS reported.  San Diego lifeguards were issuing warnings to beachgoers at 1:40 p.m. after a report of lightning along the coast.

Weather experts warn lightning strikes near the beach can be deadly. The potential for cloud to ground or cloud to water lightning strikes which could result in injury or death.

NWS suggests residents should move indoors until the storm passes and stay away from metal objects.
