SAN DIEGO -- A 48-year-old woman died Friday night after she was hit by a car in the College Area.

Around 7:45 p.m., a 66-year-old woman was driving her Nissan Versa northbound in the 4800 block of College Avenue when she hit a woman crossing the street midblock, San Diego Police Officer Robert Heims said.

The victim was taken to a hospital, where she died from her injuries. Police say she was from out-of-state and visiting her daughter when she was hit while walking to her car.

The collision was initially reported as a hit-and-run, but within an hour, the driver returned to the scene.

No alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash, police said.

College Avenue between El Cajon Boulevard and Montezuma Road was closed and was not expected to reopen until around midnight.

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call SDPD or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
