CHULA VISTA, Calif. (CNS) – A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle early Friday morning while walking in traffic lanes on Interstate 5 in Chula Vista, authorities said.

The 48-year-old Fountain Valley man was struck shortly before 2:55 a.m. while walking in traffic lanes on northbound Interstate 5 near E Street, south of state Route 54, and was pronounced dead at the scene, California Highway Patrol Officer Sal Castro said. His name was withheld pending family notification.

The driver of the involved vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with investigating officers, Castro said.

Intoxication was not a suspected factor in the crash for the driver, he said. A toxicology report on the pedestrian was pending, according to Castro.

The right three lanes on northbound I-5 near E Street were shut down until 9 a.m. for the crash investigation.
