SAN DIEGO – A pedestrian was struck and killed by a car Thursday morning on state Route 52 in the University City area.

The 51-year-old woman was walking in the eastbound lanes of SR 52 west of Genesee Avenue — why was unclear — when she was struck by a Toyota Camry shortly before 4:30 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Jake Sanchez said.

The pedestrian, whose name was withheld pending family notification, was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

The Toyota driver, a 73-year-old woman whose name was withheld, was uninjured in the crash and remained at the scene, Sanchez said.

Alcohol or drugs were not believed to be factors in the crash, the officer said.

A SigAlert was issued around 4:45 a.m. shutting down all eastbound lanes of SR 52 at Genesee Avenue. By 6:45 a.m., all lanes were reopened.
