SAN DIEGO — A driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after a crash on Interstate 8 sent five juveniles to the hospital, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. Saturday when a 26-year-old man was driving a green Ford Expedition on the Qualcomm Way onramp to I-8, California Highway Patrol explained.

The Ford was carrying seven passengers, five of which were juveniles.

For reasons under investigation, authorities say the Ford overturned, causing one of the passengers — a 3-year-old boy — to be ejected. The child was transported to Rady Children’s Hospital with major injuries.

The four other juveniles were also transported to the hospital with various injuries.

According to CHP, the driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI in relation to this incident.
