SAN DIEGO — Officers are investigating what led to a deadly crash that snarled traffic on Interstate 805 and state Route 94 early Wednesday.

California Highway Patrol said the driver of a gold Ford Explorer was westbound on SR-94 transitioning onto I-805 when the Ford veered off the roadway. The driver was ejected when the SUV flipped onto I-805, CHP said.

The driver was pronounced dead at the crash site and no one else was in the SUV at the time, CHP said.

The SR-94 ramp and three southbound lanes of I-805 at Market Street were blocked as officers investigated.

CHP has not yet identified the driver. Officers said he is a Hispanic man around 40 years old.

A toxicology report by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to help determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
