SAN DIEGO — The tip-off time for the first collegiate basketball game atop Petco Park’s baseball field has been moved to Sunday, to avoid conflict with Saturday’s collegiate football championship game at Qualcomm Stadium.

The game between college rivals from either end of Mission Valley — San Diego State and the University of San Diego — will tip off at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The tip-off was originally scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, but that’s when the Aztec football squad will host the Air Force Falcons for the Mountain West Conference championship game at Qualcomm.  On Sunday, San Diego State football coach Rocky Long told FOX 5 that starting quarterback Maxwell Smith will not return for rest of the season due to his injury.

Tickets already purchased for the basketball game will be valid on the new date and refunds will not be issued as a result of the date change, according to Petco Park.

This year marks the 18th consecutive season the two San Diego teams have played each other and only the second time the game will be played on a neutral court.

The game is the highlight of the weeklong Bill Walton Basketball Festival, which kicks off tomorrow at the hoops and boards laid on Petco Park’s infield.

The court will be used throughout the week by local schools, businesses and nonprofit organizations, according to the park. Several CIF high school games are also scheduled to take place on the court and basketball Hall of Famer Bill Walton will make multiple appearances.

Tickets to the SDSU vs. USD game are still available for purchase online.
