SAN DIEGO — A young woman who fell from the roof of a five-story building near San Diego State University has died, according to the San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office.

The woman has been identified as 19-year-old Melissa Kennon. She was a student at the university and a member of the Kappa Delta sorority.

“I could hear the loud, loud bang and then I walked over here and I saw a couple of her friends, they ran as fast as they could… someone was like ‘somebody call police, ‘ ” said Kepa Sanga who was in the area when the Kennon fell from the building.

The fall in the 5000 block of Lindo Paseo was reported just before 4 a.m., said San Diego police Officer Frank Cali.

Paramedics took the woman to Mercy Hospital, he said, adding that it was not immediately clear whether she was expected to survive, though her condition was listed as “critical.”

Kennon was pronounced dead later Friday morning. An examination has not been performed.

She was with a friend on the roof just prior to the fall and they had apparently been drinking alcohol, Cali said. Investigators believed the fall was an accident, he added.
