HURON, Calif. – A suspected burglar died Saturday after getting stuck in the chimney of a home in Huron, a small city in Fresno County, according to deputies.
The unidentified man climbed into the chimney overnight to burglarize the home but became stuck, FOX 40 reported. He was discovered when the homeowner came home and lit a fire in his fireplace, causing the burglar to scream from inside the chimney, investigators said. The homeowner tried to extinguish the fire, but the house began to fill up with smoke, officials said.
It was reported that the man was still breathing and moving inside the chimney 10 minutes before the call came into the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department. Cal Fire crews dismantled the chimney to rescue the man. However, when they pulled him out, he was dead.
Investigators will conduct an autopsy Sunday to determine the man’s identity and the cause of his death.
