SAN DIEGO — A woman was shot in the chest and killed by the father of her children in City Heights Thursday morning, police said.
Officers said the woman was shot around 5:42 a.m. near 46th Street and University Avenue.
The 29-year-old victim was found lying on the sidewalk outside a store, but investigators believe the shooting began with an argument at the couple’s nearby home. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses pointed out a man they said shot the victim, and police arrested him on suspicion of homicide after questioning him. Authorities later identified him as 28-year-old Fernando Avila.
Police were not clear on the current relationship of the pair, but said they had children together and described the shooting as a domestic violence incident.
Investigators said the kids were nearby and may have witnessed the shooting, but the exact sequence of events was still unclear Thursday afternoon.
Homicide detectives were working to learn more.
Anyone with information on the incident was asked to call the Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
