CARLSBAD, Calif. – A 19-year-old woman severed her arm when she crashed her scooter in Carlsbad early Wednesday morning.
The woman reportedly lost control of her scooter and collided with a traffic sign at Cannon Road and Hemingway Drive around 4 a.m. A witness told police the victim was speeding and unable to negotiate the turn.
According to San Diego police Sergeant Greg White, officers arrived at the scene 90 seconds after the crash and immediately applied a tourniquet.
The woman was conscious and breathing at the scene, White said. She was transported to the hospital with her severed arm, and medics were optimistic about her recovery.
Police are investigating the cause of the accident but believe alcohol was a factor in the crash
