CHULA VISTA, Calif. — Authorities released the name Thursday of a 53-year-old woman who was killed when her SUV collided with a U.S. Border Patrol vehicle at a South Bay intersection.
Maricela Ontiveros of San Diego was heading east on Olympic Parkway in Chula Vista when her Toyota RAV4 collided with the marked federal law enforcement vehicle at Brandywine Avenue about 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to police.
Emergency crews freed Ontiveros from her crumpled vehicle and took her to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Chula Vista Police Department Capt. Gary Wedge said.
The agent driving the Border Patrol SUV was evaluated at the scene by medics for complaints of pain.
Investigators determined that the crash occurred as the federal officer tried to make a left turn onto Brandywine Avenue from westbound Olympic Parkway, Wedge said.
“Although the investigation is continuing, at least one independent witness said Ontiveros failed to stop for a red light,” Wedge said.
