RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. — A woman was severely injured Wednesday when the SUV she was driving went at least 50 feet over the side of a road in Rancho Santa Fe.
The crash was reported about 7:30 p.m. on Del Dios Highway at the Lake Hodges Dam, according to the California Highway Patrol. The 35-year-old driver was heading westbound when the SUV veered across the highway and wend airborne off the roadway and continued down the steep embankment. The vehicle overturned and came to a stop more than 270 feet from the roadway.
Firefighters extracted the woman from the wreckage and took her to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido. She was in serious condition, according to the Rancho Santa Fe Fire Department.
The road was temporarily closed for the emergency response.
