VISTA, Calif. — A 46-year-old woman confessed to stabbing her husband with a steak knife over the weekend at their North County home Monday, deputies said.

The stabbing was reported just after midnight Sunday on the 300 block of Flower Lane in Vista, authorities said. When deputies arrived to investigate, they found a  man with a stab wound to his chest who was conscious and alert, said San Diego County Sheriff’s Sgt. Matthew Mays. He was taken to a local hospital and treated for a stab wound in his chest that was not considered life-threatening.

The victim’s wife, Christena Potter, 46, had fled the home. On Monday, Potter, 46, went to the Vista Sheriff’s Station accompanied by her lawyer and turned herself in. She was jailed on suspicion of attempted murder.

Potter told deputies that she and her husband argued before the stabbing. She and her husband declined to elaborate on what the argument about, said Sgt. Mays.

Several neighbors say they aren’t surprised about the stabbing due to the couple’s constant fighting. Others are relieved it’s over.

“I don’t really know them but I have talked with them a few times and they’ve always been polite to me,” Mary Key said. “I know she worked at Tri-City Hospital but I’m not sure her title there. I use to see the stethoscope hanging there from the mirror of her car.”

“I think I feel a little better knowing that it was obviously a domestic dispute and not some random wanderer coming through the neighborhood, so it feels less scary for those of us who live here,” Andersen said. “It’s crazy though. I’m glad she turned herself in.”

Potter was being held without bail pending arraignment scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
