Car slides into sinkhole caused by broken water main

ESCONDIDO, Calif. — A parked car slid into a sinkhole on a North County road Tuesday morning after a water main break flooded the street.

Water gushed from the broken, 12-inch diameter pipe on Seventh Avenue near Center City Parkway around 3 a.m. The intersection of Pine Street and Seventh was expected to remain closed until about 8 p.m., with water returning to the roughly 25 homes that lost service around 4 p.m., a City of Escondido spokesperson said.

As the street flooded and a sinkhole formed, a parked car slid into the widening gap. The vehicle was towed out of the sinkhole before becoming completely submerged.
