SAN DIEGO – San Diego police chief Shelley Zimmerman identified the suspect arrested on suspicion of shooting two officers in Southcrest on Thursday night, killing one of them.

Jesse Michael Gomez, 52, was arrested Friday on suspicion of the murder of Jonathan “JD” De Guzman and attempted murder of his partner, Wade Irwin.

Potential suspect Marcus Antonio Cassani, 41, was arrested for an outstanding warrant in the 4000 block of Epsilon Street following an hours-long SWAT standoff.

Police have not yet determined if Cassani was involved in the shootings of De Guzman and Irwin, Zimmerman said.

Late Thursday, a San Diego Police officer was killed and another wounded after they came under fire during a pedestrian or traffic stop in the Southcrest neighborhood, police said

One of the officers suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body. He was rushed to the hospital in a squad car, but doctors were unable to save him.

The other officer underwent surgery and is expected to survive, according authorities.

Police swarmed the area around the 3800 block of Boston Avenue searching for the shooter or shooters.  About 12:30 a.m., police confirmed on Twitter that they had one suspect in custody, who was also wounded by gunfire, and were searching for more.

Zimmerman described the first suspect as an  “Hispanic male adult.” She said he was found in a ravine near the 1500 block of South 38th Street. He had been shot while being taken into custody and was being treated for his wounds at a hospital, the chief said. Police continued to search the area for other possible suspects, Zimmerman  said.
