SAN DIEGO -- Crews rescued six people from inside a minivan that became trapped in floodwater leaving Fashion Valley Mall Friday evening.
Two of the five passengers told FOX 5 they were getting a ride from a rideshare driver after shopping Black Friday sales when their vehicle became stuck in nearly four feet of water from the San Diego River. It happened shortly before 5 p.m. near Avenida Del Rio near Camino De La Reina. They say the driver was trying to avoid traffic by driving around barricades and through the water.
San Diego Fire-Rescue Department personnel rescued five passengers and the driver along with several shopping bags.
Lifeguards told FOX 5 this was one of more than two dozen water rescues they had been called to since the rain started. Just 18 inches of water is enough to float a vehicle, lifeguards said. They recommend never driving around a barrier.
The driver will not face charges; however, he may be fined for the cost of the rescue, according to a police officer on scene. No injuries were reported.
