SAN DIEGO — Ten cars were severely damaged by a vandal in the Bankers Hill area north of downtown late Sunday night.

Police said a man was seen smashing the cars with a pole of some kind as he walked along Fir Street near Fifth Avenue around 11:30 p.m.

“We heard all the ‘bam, bam’ – like a gun going off.  This guy was crazy, man. He was so high, he didn’t know what he was doing,” said a witness.

The man ran off before police could arrive, leaving residents to find shattered glass and damaged cars up and down the street.

Many of the victims are neighbors who are low-income and may not have the money to replace windows.

“He chose some of the poorest people who are just trying to survive,” said Karly Shelton, whose car was vandalized.

San Diego Police Department is investigating and describe the suspect as dark-complexion, late 20s to early 30s, shoulder-length hair with a short beard and 5′ 10″ to 6′ tall.
