SAN DIEGO – For the first time in its 148-year history, the San Diego Union-Tribune endorsed a Democrat for president Friday.
“This paper has not endorsed a Democrat for president in its 148-year history. But we endorse Clinton. She’s the safe choice for the U.S. and for the world, for Democrats and Republicans alike,” the paper’s editorial board wrote.
The paper noted that Republican Donald Trump has spent his campaign lashing out at critics, insisting that the U.S. is being ripped off by every country in the world and offering simplistic solutions to complex problems. The paper noted that the reality-show billionaire’s campaign is an entertaining and convincing “show,” for millions of “Americans upset with the status quo,” but if Trump is elected, he would be command the executive branch of a global superpower. Trump would govern with no coherent plan other besides “I alone can fix it,” the paper wrote.
The paper noted there is little public enthusiasm for Clinton, but the editorial board said her temperament, experience, and relationships with world leaders are all qualities needed in the White House.
