Graduation weekend kicks off at UCSD

UCSD_studentsSAN DIEGO — A weekend of commencement ceremonies was scheduled to begin Friday at UC San Diego with the seventh annual All Campus Celebration.

More than 7,000 students are set to graduate from the various colleges at the La Jolla campus through Sunday.

The All Campus celebration is an informal event beginning at 5 p.m. for the students and their families. It will feature a dinner, fireworks and a musical performance by the San Diego-based band Pinback.

Saturday, 850 students are set to graduate from Revelle College at 1 p.m. The keynote speaker is three-time Olympic kayaker Carrie Johnson Gubser, a 2009 biochemistry alumna.

Roosevelt and Warren colleges will also hold commencement Saturday.

On Sunday, bassist Nathan East — a 1978 alumnus who has played with Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Madonna and Beyonce, among others — will be the featured speaker at the 8 a.m. graduation of Thurgood Marshall College.

Muir College, Sixth College and the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies also will have Sunday ceremonies.

Nearly 5,050 undergraduates will go through commencement over the weekend. An additional almost 2,000 graduate students in medicine, pharmacy, management and other disciplines will receive advanced degrees.
