SAN DIEGO - An Uber driver was punched in the face and carjacked downtown in the East Village early Wednesday morning, San Diego police said.

The driver, 40, was standing outside of his 2011 Nissan Versa around 1:30 a.m. at 10th and E Street with the engine running when he was attacked. The assailant punched him in the face and took off in his car, police said.

No weapons were used in the carjacking. The suspect drove south on 10th Avenue to the Marriott Marquis on West Harbor Drive before crashing the car into another Uber driver's vehicle parked outside.

The suspect then ran inside the Marriott and started banging on doors, at which point police set up a perimeter outside. Officers soon caught up to the man in the north tower and tasered him.

He was arrested. Police have not yet identified the suspect in custody.
