OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A truck attempting to make an illegal turn in Oceanside Saturday afternoon fatally struck a motorcyclist, causing traffic congestion in the area for hours after the crash, authorities said.

The motorcyclist, who police later identified as a 53-year-old man from Oceanside, was traveling westbound on Oceanside Boulevard around 2:20 p.m. when a truck leaving the El Corazon Compost facility tried to make an illegal left-hand turn onto the roadway, Oceanside police said.

The truck collided with the motorcyclist, who authorities later pronounced deceased.

The driver of the truck was arrested for gross vehicular manslaughter, according to the Oceanside Police Department.

Oceanside Blvd. between Rancho Del Oro and El Camino Real was expected to be closed to traffic until about 7 p.m. as authorities worked to clear the crash site.
