SAN DIEGO — An Escondido man has died in a two-vehicle crash in the community of Valley Center, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The crash took place shortly after 7:30 p.m. Sunday on Valley Center Road, south of the intersection with Lilac Road, according to the CHP.

Authorities said a Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 52-year-old man from Escondido was heading south on Valley Center Road wound up overtaking a Ford Fusion driven by a 17-year-old girl. For reasons that remain under investigation, the Chevrolet struck the left front of the Ford, according to CHP. The Chevrolet driver then lost control, causing his vehicle to veer to the right off the roadway, strike a wood fence, careen down an embankment, overturn, and strike a second fence, the CHP said.

The position and condition of the Silverado made access to the driver difficult, according to the CHP, and he died at the scene. His name was not immediately released. The driver of the Ford and her 16-year-old passenger were not injured.

It is unknown if driver impairment was a factor in the collision.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is urged to call the CHP at 858-637-3800.
