HOUSTON — A Texas woman who once weighed more than 1,000 pounds and was called the “Half Ton Killer” has lost 800 pounds.
Mayra Rosales was 34-years-old and weighed 1,000 in 2008. That same year, her 2-year-old nephew was killed when his mother hit him in the head with a hairbrush, according to KTRK.
Rosales’ sister allegedly begged her to take the blame for the death, so she told police she smothered the child by rolling on top of him, KTRK reported.
Police arrested Rosales, later charged her with murder. Rosales made headlines after TLC documented the case in a program called “Half-Ton Killer.”
However, an autopsy discredited her story and Rosales’ sister later confessed to the crime.
Rosales said she felt like a prisoner trapped in her bed. She vowed to get healthy and lose the weight so she could care for her sisters children.
Through multiple surgeries and changing her diet, Rosales was able to lose around 800 pounds, KTRK reported. She says she still has more weight she wants to lose.
“I was dying. I had given up in life,” Rosales said. “I was alive, but not living a life.”
Rosales hopes sharing her story will encourage and motivate others who are struggling with their weight like she once did.
Do not lose hope and keep fighting because we only have one life, and its well worth fighting for it, she told the station.
