ST. LOUIS – Do you remember Matilda, the so called “alien cat,” who became an internet sensation last year?  The adopted cat was diagnosed with “spontaneous lens luxation,” meaning that the lens of her eyes detached one at a time, creating the large glassy eyes that her 100,000-plus  Instragram followers fell in love with.

Matilda was well cared for, receiving eyes drops to help relieve pain and pressure. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worst about one month ago.  Her owners, identified as “The Bearded Man” and “The Lady,”  took to Instagram to explain that Matilda’s big eyes started to work against her, and had to be removed, FOX 2 reported.

Friends, Yesterday was the day we hoped would never come. Matilda’s big beautiful eyes started to work against her, and they had to come out. Matilda has a lot of healing to do. She has stitches and some bruising and swelling, and is missing some fur and whiskers. You know how much she loves the camera, so we’ll keep photos to a minimum until she’s camera-ready again. Although she looks different, she is still incredibly cute and inspiring! But for now, it’s all about rest and healing. Please though, keep sending your art. We love it so much! Think of it as a get well soon card. A friend to the end. ❤️ This post is dedicated to Dog. So much has been going on with my eyes, and everything is going great there, but we had another big event in our lives recently. Our beloved Dog, my brother and companion, had to leave us. Our hearts are broken. He was my best friend and my teammate here on Earth, from the day I came home until his last day. He taught me to watch for popcorn that fell on the floor, and he put up with my crap when I'd swat his nose for no reason. I'll love him and miss him forever. 👫 Until we meet again old boy! 💞 #truelove #love #catanddog #partnersincrime #rainbowbridge #animals #catsofinstagram #dogsofinstagram #bordercollie #bordercolliesofinstagram #bordercollies #tabby #matilda #aliencatmatilda #aliencat #caturday #untilwemeetagain
