OCEANSIDE, Calif. – A 22-month-old boy and his mother were found unconscious in an Oceanside home and the child’s death was being investigated as a homicide, police said Thursday.

Oceanside police and paramedics were called to a home on 300 block of Woodpark Way at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday after the young boy was found not breathing.

Paramedics attempted CPR on the young boy and his 28-year-old mother, who was found unconscious in a downstairs room, police said.

The toddler was pronounced dead at the home, but paramedics were able to revive the woman.

The arrival of an ambulance and police cars brought neighbors out of their homes. They said the woman screamed when she learned that he son was dead.

“I heard the screaming like bloody murder. You know, a mother screaming for her child’s death is basically what I heard,” one woman said.

Onlookers realized that someone was dead when investigators taped off the home.

“They got her into the stretcher, clipped her down and took her out,” another neighbor said. “And as they were coming back, they brought the caution tape. So once they brought the caution tape, everybody knew.”

The mother was transported to Tri City Medical Center, where she was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Oceanside police Sgt. Nate Brazelton said.

Investigators did not disclose who called them about the incident or the identities of the mother and child.

“There were no injuries other than the child was not responding, not breathing and cold to the touch… no external injuries whatsoever,” said Lt. Aaron Doyle with the Oceanside Police Department.

The medical examiner’s initial findings are expect on Friday.
