robberySAN DIEGO — A man who claimed to have a concealed pistol made an aborted attempt to rob a Hillcrest pizzeria today, authorities said.

The would-be thief confronted employees at the Papa John’s restaurant in the 1200 block of University Avenue shortly before 11:30 a.m., claimed to have a gun in the gym bag he was carrying and demanded cash, according to San Diego police.

Seeing the manager of the business hurry out of the building, the bandit left empty-handed, got into a nearby parked silver Chevrolet Monte Carlo and drove north. Witnesses described him as a bearded, muscular black man in his 20s or 30s, wearing black shorts, a white shirt, white-rimmed sunglasses and a bandana on his head.
