The Loren Nancarrow Healing Garden: Giving Back & Paying it Forward

If you would have asked me a year ago what the “Loren Nancarrow Healing Garden” was, I would have probably said wherever he last planted something.  The man was always elbow deep into worms, compost, seedlings and anything else nature churned up from the earth.  So the idea, that in the midst of his own strenuous battle with brain cancer,  he would roll up his sleeves again and dig in to help others in the same boat – is about as surprising as Loren voting democratic.

As his son Graham says in this touching video by Scripps Health (to promote the garden they hope to name in his honor):  “He’s always been one to start some kind of cause.”  This time, it’s to give back and pay it forward.  Loren and his family want to give back to all the Scripps doctors, nurses and support staff who have helped them through this journey and pay it forward in the name of all the future cancer patients who will follow.  Through his battle, repeatedly Loren has said he can’t believe how hard some people have it.  “They don’t even have rides to treatments.”  Comparing his “good fortune” to others struggling financially on top of everything else.  That’s  just one of the reasons he started “The Nancarrow Project” to raise money for those simplest, yet most crucial of needs.

So here he is in the fight of his life, now asking again for you to help his fellow cancer warriors by donating to the “Loren Nancarrow Healing Garden“.  A rooftop escape  perched atop the new Scripps Radiation Therapy Center off Torrey Pines Road, so people spending hours a day there in treatments can go outside, take in the view, feel the grass, listen to the bubbling fountains and watch the birds.  In essence, so they can be normal for a moment and have their own little calm, in the middle of their cancer storm.  A place where their families can breathe alongside them and maybe even remember what they’re fighting for.

If you would like to help please go to www.Scripps.Org/Loren to make a donation.  If just 20,000 San Diegans gave 25 dollars each they’ll reach their goal of  $500,000.  Money that will be used to battle cancer and provide cutting edge treatments throughout the Scripps Healthcare System in San Diego…the garden being the cherry on top.

On a personal note, it would also be a fitting tribute to a man who’s spent a lifetime loving the land, nurturing nature and inhaling all it has to offer.  Loren is an avid environmentalist, organic farmer and animal lover.  All this will be circulating throughout this garden for years to come with his spirit and presence all around.  A living tribute to my friend… who always lived to the fullest.

I think Elton John said it best about John Lennon…

“He must have been a gardener that cared a lot. Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop.  And we are so amazed…we’re crippled and we’re dazed.  A gardener like that one no one can replace.”

No one indeed.

With Love, Your “KB”.
