BONITA, Calif. — Thirteen players and three coaches from the Sweetwater Valley Little League team received a thunderous ovation Tuesday as they took the stage one by one at their homecoming celebration.
Although they fell short of winning the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, their efforts were recognized and praised by several speakers including County Supervisor Greg Cox, Chula Vista Mayor Mary Salas and singer Frankie J.
Team members said they appreciated the enthusiastic crowd and support they received throughout their run at the title.
“It’s just awesome for our team. All these people here, it’s very nice,” said Nate Nankil, pitcher and third baseman.
“It’s cool, all the people to support us. I know people were cheering for us when we were in Williamsport but now I know it’s true,” said Antonio Andrade, pitcher and outfielder.
For fans who showed up, it was a chance to meet the players, take a few pictures and grab autographs.
One woman drove about 15 miles from the west side of Chula Vista to attend the event.
“I can’t believe I’m here. Don’t even live around here. It made me so happy,” Ruthann said.
