SAN DIEGO — A homeless man was behind bars Wednesday for allegedly confronting a woman and her baby in a women’s restroom at a Kohl’s department store and threatening them with a knife during a failed robbery attempt.
Jason Robert Arringdale, 20, was arrested without incident on a Hillcrest roadside Wednesday afternoon by a San Diego police sergeant who recognized him from surveillance-camera photos captured at the Kohl’s where the crime occurred last week, SDPD Lt. Chuck Kaye said.
The victims were in a ladies’ room at the College Avenue store shortly before 2 p.m. last Thursday when Arringdale exited a stall, tapped the woman on the shoulder and allegedly threatened them with the bladed weapon, according to Kaye.
When the mother screamed, the assailant fled. She and her 4-month-old child were unharmed.
The suspect, an Iowa native who told investigators he lived in Balboa Park, allegedly had stolen the knife from a Target store shortly before the restroom confrontation, Kaye said.
Arringdale was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of burglary, attempted robbery and exhibiting a deadly weapon in a threatening manner. He was being held on $100,000 bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Friday afternoon.
