SAN DIEGO -- A suspect in three arson fires among a string of more than a dozen set in City Heights neighborhoods in recent weeks was in custody Saturday, authorities said.

Suspect Rolando Resendiz, 24 was arrested early today by detectives from the Metro Arson Strike Team (MAST).

“Officers responding to the fire stopped Resendiz who was found walking away from the area of a fire believed to have been deliberately set on the porch of a home in the 5200 block of Ogden Street," San Diego Fire-Rescue
spokesman Lee Swanson said. “San Diego Fire-Rescue crews quickly extinguished the fire and no injuries were reported.”

Damage was estimated at $400 in the Ogden porch fire Saturday.

“There was a bag of clothes and toys on the porch set out to be donated, and that bag was set on fire,'' Swanson said. “There was slight damage to the porch railing.”

Evidence located by detectives also linked Resendiz to two other fires set on March 31, Swanson said.

Resendiz has not been linked to several other fires set in City Heights over the past month. Some of those fires were set in close proximity to one another in blocks on Landis, Wightman and Ogden streets.

After questioning by detectives, Resendiz was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of two counts of arson to an occupied structure, and one count of arson to property.

An investigation was continuing.

A reward of up to $2,000 was offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Anyone with information about any of the fires was urged to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477, or to contact the agency online at Tipsters may remain anonymous.
