SAN DIEGO – A female student was sexually assaulted in the stairwell of the building at City College, campus police said Tuesday.

Investigators said the attack took place at about 2 p.m. Monday in the stairwell of the T building on the downtown campus. They did not provide details about the attack, which they called a "sexual battery."

"She had reported to us that they had walked into a stairwell, where he then started to make those unwanted advances toward her...and after a short period of time they ultimately left the area and continued walking together towards another part of the campus, and then eventually parted ways," City College Campus Police Lt. Lou Zizzo said.

The victim described her attacker as a light-skinned man, about 26 years old, 5 feet 6 inches tall with a muscular build. He was wearing a gray shirt with yellow and blue writing, and blue or black sweat pants.

Campus police remind students to be aware of their surroundings at all times.

“We talk to our students and we let them know that they should be programming college police dispatch phone number into their cell phones," Zizzo said. "If they take classes at night and feel unsafe walking anywhere, we provide 24-hour escorts to them…and we really try to let them know if they really don’t feel safe walking around, use the buddy system."

Student Ashley Rodriguez heard about the attack through a campus email. She will be taking night classes next semester and says she is already prepared to utilize campus safety resources.

“I do see a lot of notifications around the school warning you and letting you know, but I think it’s on everyone to make sure they’re safe too," Rodriguez said. "Stay away from different certain areas, don’t hang around alone…make sure you’re with a friend things like that. If you don’t feel safe, why not ask an officer? It’s better to be safe than sorry."

Anyone with information about the crime should call City College Police at 619-388-6405 or the San Diego Police Department at 619-531-2000.
