CATALINA ISLAND, Calif. – A student pilot and his flight instructor are missing after their small plane disappeared near the coast of Catalina Island during Memorial Day weekend, officials said.

The search for Edmond Haronian, 50, of Woodland Hills and his 52-year-old instructor Jason Glazier, of Encino, has been underway since Saturday, Los Angeles Times reported.

The pair's single-engine Cessna 172 took off from Catalina Island Airport on Saturday afternoon, but failed to arrive at Van Nuys airport, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor told the Times.

Authorities were alerted about their failure to arrive on time by FAA officials, Gregor said.
