CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. — Six people were killed in a van accident early Saturday on a highway in Virginia, state police said.

The van ran off and came back onto the road. It hit a car that spun out of control, police said.

The vehicle ran off the road again on the other side of Interstate 95, where the driver overcorrected to get back onto the highway. That caused the van to flip over five or six times, ejecting the six passengers, police said.

The occupants were not wearing seatbelts, police said.

The driver of the 1998 Dodge van and nine surviving passengers were taken to two hospitals in Caroline and Spotsylvania counties with serious injuries, officials said.

The driver of the car, a 2016 Toyota Camry, was not hurt.

The six dead include a juvenile, a woman and four men. Police will not release their names until their families are notified.
