SAN DIEGO -- A road in National City was closed Thursday after a sinkhole formed late Wednesday night.

Crews covered the sinkhole on Rachael Avenue near 18th Street shortly after it was reported around 11 p.m. Wednesday.

The road remained shut down in both directions Thursday but some residents walked around the area, taking in the damage.

Maria Castro, who lives in the building directly next to the sinkhole, expressed alarm when she realized its proximity to her home.

"This morning when I went and picked up my trashcan on the street, on Rachael, I go, 'Oh my god I hope I don't sink here. That'll be the end for Maria Castro!'" she said.

Castro told FOX 5 she'd never seen a sinkhole form in her neighborhood before and was worried at first that it would expand.

Rachel Avenue remained closed Thursday and was expected to remain blocked off until repairs are completed.

Officials did not immediately say what caused the sinkhole to form in the first place.
