SPRING VALLEY, Calif. - A holdup at an unlicensed East County medical marijuana shop erupted in gunfire Tuesday, wounding a good Samaritan and an alleged robber, who later was arrested along with a suspected accomplice.

The shooting in the 9000 block of Campo Road in Spring Valley was reported about 11 a.m., according to sheriff's officials.

According to deputies, when the two armed men tried to rob the pot shop, a 32-year-old employee at the neighboring business Smoke N Stuff heard the altercation and entered the business.  He attempted to stop the suspects and was shot in the leg.

“I heard a commotion, then I heard some gunshots and saw a guy approaching me with blood on him,” a witness told Fox 5. “I asked him if he was all right and he said, ‘No.’”

A friend of a smoke shop employee said he had pulled into the parking lot and heard gunfire and saw people running out of the store.

“I saw people running out and couple of them were bloody. One person had a bat,” a witness said. “The guy that was running was pretty dazed, he wasn’t running a straight line. You could tell something was wrong with him.”

A short time later, a deputy pulled over two suspects on a nearby street. The passenger, identified as 29-year-old James Crutcher, jumped out and escaped on foot, despite having been shot several times during the robbery, May said.

The driver, 30-year-old Frank Daley, resisted arrest, according to Mays, but was eventually taken into custody after a K-9 helped bring him down.

Deputies eventually caught up with Crutcher in the 4100 block of Camino Paz and took him into custody.

Both suspects were taken to a hospital.

Sheriff's officials did not immediately disclose who fired the shots that wounded Crutcher and the smoke-shop employee.
