SAN MARCOS, Calif. – A man was in jail Monday morning after stabbing another man in the neck following a fight in San Marcos, the San Diego Sheriff’s Department said.

A group of men were gathered at 580 Charlotte Drive in San Marcos around 10 p.m. Another man challenged one of the men to a fight. His response was to flick the cap of the challenger, which prompted him to pull out a knife and stab the man in the neck.

An onlooker in the group tried to wrestle the knife away, cutting the stabber’s hands in the process. He then fled the scene.

A short time later, Escondido Police arrived at Palomar Medical Center after reports of a man checking in with cuts to his hands. The patient, 20, was identified as the suspect and arrested for attempted murder.

The stabbing victim, 25, was also taken to Palomar Medical Center. The severity of his injuries was unclear.

No other injuries were reported or  arrests made.
