Shark sighting reported near Del Mar beach

DEL MAR, Calif. — A shark sighting was reported off the coast of Del Mar beach Tuesday, city lifeguards said.

Signs posted in the sand near 15th street advised beachgoers to enter the water at their own risk.

According the City of Del Mar’s website, there was another shark sighting reported on Monday near 29th Street. In both cases, lifeguards said the sharks were juvenile white sharks and  that the sharks did not exhibit aggressive behavior nor did they approach the shore.

According to the Del Mar website, Shark Lab, which studies behavioral and physiological ecology of marine mammals and other species, the waters of Southern California are a known nursery habitat for white sharks.

The shark sighting advisory and the signs will remain in place for another 24 hours unless other sightings are reported.
