OCEANSIDE, Calif. — One person was killed when a a tractor-trailer hit a stopped sedan near Camp Pendleton Monday morning, sparking a fire that engulfed the smaller car.

The crash happened around 5 a.m. on southbound Interstate 5, near Las Pulgas Road and the Aliso Creek Rest Area, according to California Highway Patrol.

CHP was already headed to the area to help a car that had come to a stop on the freeway when a big rig hit the stalled vehicle. “Immediately after the collision flames were seen coming out from under” the sedan, CHP said in a press release.

The smaller car was pinned to the center divider and flames had engulfed the car by the time officers arrived, officials said.

After firefighters extinguished the flames, a dead body was found inside the vehicle. CHP did not release further details about the victim and said an investigation was underway with the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The two left lanes of southbound I-5 were blocked in the area for several hours but reopened around 10:30 a.m.
