SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Fire-Rescue called off its search for a 27-year-old man who reportedly fell from Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach Sunday night. However, the U.S. Coast Guard will continue looking for him overnight.

Crews searched from land, sea, and air for more than an hour, but were not able to locate him, San Diego City Services Media Manager Monica Munoz said.

At one point, more than one dozen lifeguards were in the water, while others performed visual searches from on top of the pier, Munoz said.

Witnesses say the fully clothed man was near the railing just before seeing him fall around 5:30 p.m. He was said to have hit his head on the pilings before plunging below the surface. Witnesses did not report seeing the man resurface afterward.

At the time, surf in the area was at 4 to 6 feet with strong rip currents.

The SDFD Lifeguard Division dive team is expected to perform a recovery effort Monday at 6 a.m., Munoz said.
