CHULA VISTA, Calif. – A man suspected of a stabbing in San Ysidro and a second man were arrested Tuesday hours after barricading themselves in an Otay Ranch home.
Around 8:15 p.m., police went to Avenida De La Cruz near Beyer Boulevard after a fight broke out between a man and a woman. A bystander attempted to break it up and was stabbed in the head, San Diego police said. The people involved in the fight left the area.
A police helicopter tracked a car with the stabbing suspect to a home on Cilantro Way. Some residents of the complex were asked to leave while SWAT began to mobilize. Resident Joseph Whelpley and his daughter Carol watched the entire thing unfold.
“I looked outside my window and there was like lights from the helicopter and stuff,” said Carol Whelpley.
Police had surrounded their neighbor's unit across from their's, and were screaming through a megaphone for someone inside to surrender.
“We talked to them once in a while and they seemed like normal people, but I don’t know that’s not a normal situation,” said Whelpley.
Authorities took two men, who were hiding in an attic, into custody at an apartment on Cilantro Way around 5:30 a.m. after SWAT officers forced their way into the home.
“Negotiations were unsuccessful. So the San Diego Police Department’s SWAT team went in and took the suspect and his companion into custody with no force used, and no injuries,” said San Diego Police Captain Adam Sharki.
Meanwhile residents at the complex are still shocked this happened at all.
“We don’t have this problem in our neighborhood you know it’s kinda odd,” said Resident, Joseph Whelpley. “When the police are that close to your house and there’s a helicopter with a bullhorn. It’s time to pay close attention to your neighbors."
The stabbing suspect faces assault with a deadly weapon charge. The other man was arrested for obstruction, police said.
The stabbing victim had minor injuries.
