SAN DIEGO — The San Diego State University and University of San Diego men’s basketball teams will play their annual city rivalry game this year at Petco Park on Dec. 5, the Padres and both schools announced Friday.
The 2 p.m. game will be played on an outdoor court placed on the ballpark’s infield, running lengthwise between third base and home plate.
Bleachers will be set up along the open sides of the court to accommodate around 3,000 fans. With regular Petco Park seating, capacity for the event is expected be around 20,000.
“Petco Park has been a versatile facility that has taken on different shapes and sizes in recent years, from a tennis court to a Supercross course,” said Padres President and CEO Mike Dee. “We look forward to hosting basketball activities and welcoming two local schools to play outdoors in the middle of downtown San Diego.”
Padres and city officials have been working to boost the number of off-season events at the ballpark.
The game will kick off a new five-game series between the schools, the final four contests of which will alternate between Viejas Arena at SDSU and the Jenny Craig Pavilion at USD.
