SAN DIEGO — Slain San Diego police Officer Jeremy Henwood will be remembered at two events Friday, including a fundraiser at the McDonald’s restaurant where he bought a meal for a child before he was fatally shot.

McDonald’s will donate a portion of proceeds from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to the San Diego Police Officers Association Widows & Orphans Fund, the SDPOA said. The eatery is at 3879 Fairmount Ave. in City Heights.

The four-year veteran and Marine reservist was on duty in a marked San Diego Police Department cruiser four years ago Friday when a suicidal young man pulled up alongside him on University Avenue at 45th Street and opened fire with a .12-gauge shotgun.

The 36-year-old Canadian-born officer, who served tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, died in a hospital early the next day.

But it’s the moments before Henwood was killed that most remember. Surveillance video showed the officer buying cookies for a young boy at McDonald’s.

About a half-hour later after Henwood was mortally wounded, police shot and killed the assailant when he allegedly reached for the weapon after they confronted him near his apartment, a few blocks from the site of the slaying.

Naomi Himmelberger was there that fateful night.

“I opened his door, leaned over him and picked up his radio and called for help,” the Good Samaritan said. “I immediately lifted him up, opened up his airways and just sat and spoke with him. I knew that there wasn’t much else I could do but I wanted him to know that his family loved him that we were there for him and that he was cared for.”

She said Henwood has forever changed her life and how she treats others. She says his legacy will be her acts of kindness.

“I get to share in his memories, in his life and his service with all of his friends and family. I’m forever grateful for that.” Said Himmelberger. “Kindness in excess. In all situations.”

Henwood’s mother Beverley said she’s grateful San Diegans have not forgotten her son.

“I miss my son. But I think he is still very well remembered and truly honored. It’s an honor for me to be here,” she told FOX 5.

In February last year, the city dedicated a park in City Heights in Henwood’s memory. A remembrance ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park at 3700 Fairmount Ave.
