SAN DIEGO — Organizers with San Diego’s Earth Day celebration said they still need volunteers for Earth Fair 2013 in Balboa Park.

“Everything has unfolded as it should and we’re looking forward to a beautiful Earth Day this year,” said Carolyn Chase, an event co-founder.

Around 50,000 people are expected to attend.  The Earth Fair will feature more than 300 exhibitors and is typically produced by some 400 volunteers.

Organizers said they only have about 275 right now.

Chase said preparations slowed down because of politics and the threat the event would have to be cancelled.

Earlier this year, San Diego Mayor Bob Filner hinted that the traditional Earth Fair grounds at Balboa Park would not be available for the event because of safety concerns due to a construction project which never materialized.

“Since the project wasn’t going to happen they let us have Earth Day,” said Chase.
