SAN DIEGO – A Scripps Ranch High School graduate who was about to finish her veterinary studies at UC Davis was shot and killed by her roommate, authorities said.

Yolo County Coroner’s official said Whitney Joypauline Engler, 27, was found dead in a home she shared with 23-year-old Joseph Hein. Hein apparently committed suicide after he fatally shot Engler in the head and chest.

Their bodies were found early Friday morning by a SWAT team.

Davis police received an emergency call just before 7 p.m. Thursday from a man who told dispatchers that a man and woman were dead, then he hung up. SWAT officers tracked the phone call to Engler’s home. They entered the home and found the two dead bodies.

Engler was set to graduate from UC Davis in May.  She was part of the 2005 Scripps Ranch High class and attended University of Michigan, where she earned a degree in brain behaviorist with a small-animal practice.

A memorial scholarship in Engler’s honor has been established by the School of Veterinary Medicine. Checks may be sent to UC Davis Foundation, School of Veterinary Medicine, Office of the Dean, P.O. Box 1167, Davis, CA, 95617 or online.
