Driver checking smartphone causes rollover crash

SAN DIEGO – A driver who was looking at his smartphone ran a red light and caused a rollover crash on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard that sent two other people to the hospital Wednesday morning, police said.

A white Ford F-150 was heading east on Nimitz Boulevard when he ran a red light and smashed into a Blue Ford Ranger around 6:30 a.m., causing the Ranger to overturn, police said. Both passengers in the overturned vehicle were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the F-150 was unhurt.

San Diego Fire closed one lane of the Nimitz Boulevard on-ramp to eastbound Interstate 8 during the clean-up.

A tow truck righted the Ranger around 7 a.m. All lanes were reopened around 7:30 a.m.
