SAN DIEGO - Retired Sgt. Craig Johnson with the San Diego County Sheriff's Office is sharing his story in his new book, "Shots Fired Deputy Down."

In the book he recalls terrifying moments when he was shot and nearly killed by a suspected child predator in Lakeside on September 25th, 2012.

Johnson spent 25 years with the San Diego Sheriff's Office and never found himself on the opposite end of gunfire until that warm September day.

He and his team of deputies went to check on a suspected child molester inside one of the Maplewood apartments along Mapleview and Ashwood streets.

Detective Ali Perez was the first to be shot and wounded by the suspect.

Johnson said he, Perez and another deputy were trapped in the apartment complex as another estimated 50 bullets were fired.

He was stunned and only realized he had been shot after looking down at his arm, and it was split open.

The same bullet penetrated twice through his chest, shattering two of his ribs into 25 pieces, which remains inside him to this day.

He said six weeks following the shooting he was cleaning his bandage, and pulled a bullet fragment out of his left chest area.

That bullet fragment is now part of a cross pendant on a necklace he wears and graces the cover of his new book.

Johnson has also kept the tactical vest he wore that day with bullet fragments and pieces of his skin, still attached to the fabric.

Post traumatic stress disorder followed the shooting, plaguing him mentally and emotionally with depression and suicidal thoughts.

Part of his healing came from writing the book in which he did not originally plan to publish. However, he had a greater message in that his Christian faith helped him survive the gun shot wounds and kept him afloat during his time battling PTSD.

The Ebook is available on Amazon Kindle and the softcover can be ordered on Amazon.
