SAN MARCOS, Calif. – A San Marcos man posted security video of a man who stole holiday packages from his front porch and hopes local authorities can help catch the thief.

Tim Paige caught the man on camera, stealing the packages from his front porch on Chesterfield Circle.

“It’s pretty sad, but it’s all too easy during the season,” said Paige.

Package poachers, also known a porch pirates, are a huge problem this holiday season, according to San Diego County Sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Rich Eaton. Most thieves steal packages and either trade them or sell them for drugs, he said.

“It appears to be countywide, that these drug addicts are preying on easy targets,” Eaton said.

Investigators said they found methamphetamine, heroin and a loaded gun when they pulled over Gary Withers and Kristina Green, both of San Diego.  They also found packages belonging to 13 other people.

Withers and Green were taken into custody after an alert Amazon delivery driver noticed them trailing him in Encinitas, according to investigators. The driver said he would deliver a package and the couple would go steal it. He called 9-1-1 and deputies found them, detectives said.

Eaton showed the couples’ “to do list” that was also found in their car.  It had “kiss mom” just below “shop lift.”
