SAN DIEGO – Voters in two San Diego County cities turned down measures that would have allowed medical marijuana dispensaries.

The pro-marijuana measures were denied by voters in La Mesa and Encinitas with nearly identical margins of 55% and 45%.

Opponents had warned if Encinitas passed the measure, it could have become the “pot destination for North County,” the Los Angeles Times reported. Nine other cities near Encinitas rejected similar medical marijuana measures in the past.

Medical marijuana dispensaries are legal in the city of San Diego and are currently evaluating applications.
