SAN DIEGO – The World War II veteran who ran for Congress in southern San Diego was hospitalized on Election Day, according to a report.

Republican candidate Stephen Meade, 88, was rushed to the hospital Tuesday after suffering an “annoying” heart problem, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.

He’s expected to undergo open heart surgery.

Meade lost the race for the 51st Congressional District to Democrat Rep. Juan Vargas 68% to 32%.

The candidate is known for wearing dresses and preferring to be called Stephanie. His wife Marilyn doesn’t seem to mind.
